Civic life includes initiatives with a focus on the development or improvement of buildings or public spaces. In addition, we also respond to requests for disaster relief as well as community upliftment or fundraising initiatives.
BAT South Africa has historically supported the following civic organisations as part of its Social Investment activity:
British American Tobacco South Africa gives its employees an opportunity to participate in activities aimed at uplifting communities in which the company operates to give tangible meaning to its business principle of "mutual benefit".
Kuyasa Horizon Empowerment is a Non-Profit Organisation based in the heart of Khayamandi, Cape Town, working with disadvantaged communities. BAT South Africa assisted Kuyasa in the construction of a home for a family that was left destitute after it was destroyed during a storm.
In the spirit of Mandela Day, and to help address the needs of those less fortunate, we launched an employee blanket drive called “Project Fudumalisa”, meaning ‘Keep Warm’ in both Xhosa and Zulu, in the lead up to Mandela Day on 18 July 2012. This was an opportunity to make a difference in commemoration of the spirit of Madiba. Employees were asked to contribute blankets, beanies, scarves and jerseys, which we donated to a number of charities and organizations serving underprivileged communities around the country. In the Western Cape, we donated over 1000 blankets to the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre. BAT South Africa continues to work with the City’s Disaster Risk Management Centre to assist where it is most needed.
